The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an investigation into the allegations of civilian deaths following an airstrike in Katsina State, as ordered by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar.

The strike occurred on February 15, 2025, at Yauni Hill in the Zakka Ward of Safana Local Government Area, as part of Operation Fasan Yanma. This operation was initiated in response to an attack by bandits on a Police Mobile Force (PMF) base, which resulted in the death of two PMF officers and four vigilantes.

According to Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, the airstrike successfully neutralized several bandits at their suspected hideout. However, reports emerged suggesting that there were civilian casualties.

“While these claims are distressing, they remain allegations until a comprehensive investigation is concluded. The NAF operates under strict rules of engagement and internationally accepted standards to minimize collateral damage. The well-being of Nigerian citizens remains our top priority,” stated Akinboyewa in a release dated February 17.
