Benin City, Edo state
In an unfortunate turn of events, the Delta State Government’s task force has been implicated in the demise of two motorcyclists, commonly referred to as Okada riders, near the Koka junction along the Ibusa road in Asaba, the state capital. Following this incident, Okada riders staged a demonstration on Monday, disrupting major thoroughfares in the Oshimili South and Oshimili North Local Government Areas.
Truth Live News gathered that the fatal encounter occurred during a clash between Okada riders and task force officers on Sunday, during a raid on a makeshift bar where the riders frequently congregated. The raid was purportedly conducted due to the prohibition of motorcycles in the area.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaotic scene, with one observer noting the resistance by the bikers to relocation efforts by the task force, resulting in the tragic death of one motorcyclist. Subsequently, tensions escalated, leading to vandalism in various locations.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, acknowledged the deaths and assured that investigations were underway. Despite the gravity of the situation, authorities remain vigilant in managing the unrest.
This regrettable incident underscores the complexities surrounding law enforcement operations and the delicate balance between maintaining public order and preserving human life. As the investigation unfolds, it is imperative for all stakeholders to prioritize accountability and seek constructive avenues for resolving grievances to prevent further escalation of tensions.
