The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) has approached the Federal High Court seeking an order to deregister five political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Accord Party, along with three others yet to be formally named in public filings.
The AGF, acting in his capacity as the chief law officer of the federation, filed the suit citing the parties’ alleged failure to meet the constitutional and statutory requirements for the continued registration of political parties in Nigeria.
According to the suit, the affected parties are said to have failed to win a single seat in any of the legislative houses at the state or federal level during the most recent general elections, a condition stipulated under Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
The AGF’s legal team argued that the continued recognition of parties that do not meet this threshold places an unnecessary administrative and financial burden on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.
The development has drawn sharp reactions from officials of the affected parties, who described the move as politically motivated and a threat to democratic pluralism.
