Bauchi Govt Orders Resignation of Aspiring Candidates in Public Office

The government of Bauchi State has directed all political appointees seeking elective office to resign from their positions by Friday, 24 April 2026.

The directive was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.

Mr Gidado said the decision was in line with the Electoral Act 2026 (as amended), which requires public office holders to step down before taking part in party primaries.

“All political appointees interested in contesting elective positions are required to resign on or before Friday, April 24, 2026, to ensure full compliance with the law,” the statement said.

He added that the move was aimed at promoting transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

“This directive is necessary to avoid any conflict of interest and to uphold the integrity of the democratic process,” he said.

Affected officials have also been instructed to hand over all government property and formally transfer their duties to the appropriate authorities within their ministries, departments and agencies.

The state government expressed appreciation for the contributions of the appointees to governance and development.

“The government appreciates their service and wishes them success in their political aspirations,” the statement added.
