OYSIEC Seeks Stronger Collaboration with INEC Ahead of LG Polls

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has called for sustained collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to boost the credibility, transparency, and efficiency of upcoming local government elections in the state.

OYSIEC Chairman, Dr. Afees Adeniyi, made the appeal on Thursday, March 26, 2026, during a courtesy visit to INEC’s headquarters in Ibadan.

Adeniyi said the visit was aimed at formally notifying INEC of the newly scheduled election date—December 29, 2026—and to seek the commission’s support for a smooth and credible electoral process.

He emphasized the importance of synergy between both electoral bodies, noting that the law mandates INEC to provide support to state electoral commissions.

“We are here to engage with INEC as a sister agency, formally inform you of our election date, and present our requests,” he said.

“We received tremendous support from your office in 2023, and we are grateful. We look forward to continued guidance as we prepare for the forthcoming elections.”

Adeniyi added that OYSIEC would be requesting key electoral materials, including an updated voter register, and also seeking expert advice on tackling voter apathy and other challenges.

Responding, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo State, Prof. Adeniran Tella, assured OYSIEC of INEC’s readiness to collaborate in ensuring free, fair, and credible local government elections.

Tella emphasized the crucial role of state electoral commissions in strengthening grassroots democracy, noting that credible local elections are vital for good governance and development.

“As you assume office, I urge you to uphold professionalism, neutrality, and respect for the rule of law,” he said.

He also pointed out the recurring trend of ruling parties dominating local government elections, stressing the need for electoral bodies to demonstrate independence and integrity.

“It is time for state electoral commissions to show courage by conducting truly credible elections that reflect the will of the people,” Tella added.

He expressed optimism that the engagement would further strengthen the working relationship between INEC and OYSIEC.
