Mustapha Kwankwaso, son of former NNPP presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has resigned his membership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), signalling a fresh political move.
Mustapha, a former Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, made the announcement in a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, March 30, 2026.
He disclosed that he is already taking steps to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), just a day after his father also exited the NNPP ahead of his planned defection to the same party.
Describing his decision as carefully thought out, Mustapha said it followed extensive reflection on his political future.
“I want to inform the general public that as of today, I have officially resigned my membership from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP),” he stated.
“This decision has not been taken lightly, and I want to assure you that it is a deliberate and well-considered move. I am currently in the process of joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and I am excited about this new chapter in my political journey.”
He explained that his move to the ADC is driven by his belief that the party presents a stronger platform to achieve meaningful progress in Nigeria, particularly in Kano State.
According to him, the party’s vision aligns with his aspirations for good governance, economic growth, and improved living standards for citizens.
“My decision to join the ADC is driven by my conviction that it is best positioned to bring the desired change and progress to our country, Nigeria, and particularly to our state, Kano,” he added.
Mustapha’s resignation comes amid ongoing political realignments, with his father expected to formally join the ADC later on Monday.
