NDC Sets Up Screening Panel for Governorship, NASS Primaries

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has constituted a 20-member National Selection Committee to oversee the screening and final selection of aspirants ahead of its forthcoming governorship and National Assembly primaries.

The party said the committee is part of efforts to strengthen internal democracy and ensure a transparent candidate selection process ahead of the 2026 elections.

In a statement issued on Friday, the National Secretary of the party, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, confirmed the development.

“The National Working Committee has approved the constitution of a National Selection Committee as part of preparations for the forthcoming primaries,” he said.

He added that the committee would be formally inaugurated on Monday, 25 May 2026, and would commence work immediately after its inauguration.

According to him, the body will be responsible for reviewing reports from the National Screening Committee and taking final decisions on all aspirants seeking to contest under the party’s platform.

The statement also noted that the party leadership approved the decision following recommendations from the National Working Committee of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

“The Committee is expected to scrutinise all screening reports and ensure only qualified aspirants progress in the process,” the statement said.

The National Chairman of the party, Moses Zuwoghe, will chair the committee, while the National Secretary will serve as secretary.

Other members include political figures such as Buba Galadima, Yunusa Tanko, Udenta Udenta, and Aminu Abdulsalam, among others.

Speaking further, the party stressed that the new structure was aimed at promoting fairness and reducing disputes during the primaries.

“We are committed to ensuring a credible, transparent and inclusive process that will produce candidates acceptable to all stakeholders,” the statement added.

The party explained that only aspirants cleared by the screening and selection committees would be eligible to purchase nomination forms.

It also stated that where consensus cannot be reached, the party would conduct direct primaries scheduled for 28 to 30 May 2026.

The NDC said the reforms reflect its commitment to internal democracy and its readiness for the upcoming general elections.
