Obi Passes NDC Screening, Emerges Sole Presidential Aspirant

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Wednesday cleared former Anambra State governor Peter Obi to contest in the 2027 presidential election, making him the party’s sole aspirant ahead of its forthcoming primaries.

Obi was screened by the party’s national screening committee at the NDC secretariat in Abuja after arriving on Tuesday evening alongside Senator Victor Umeh of Anambra Central.

The committee, led by former Minister of Education Sam Egwu, said Obi met the conditions required to participate in the presidential contest.

Speaking after the exercise on Wednesday, Egwu said the panel was satisfied with Obi’s responses during the screening process.

“The committee carefully reviewed his credentials and engaged him on critical national and party matters. We are satisfied with his performance and he has been cleared to participate in the party’s presidential primaries,” Egwu said.

He added that Obi was officially presented with the party’s clearance certificate and nomination form bearing the number “001”.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party and remains one of the country’s prominent opposition figures.

Political observers say his emergence as the only aspirant could strengthen his position within the NDC as preparations for the 2027 general election begin to intensify.
