PHOTOS: Turaki-Led PDP Faction Convenes Emergency BoT Meeting After Court Nullifies Ibadan Convention

Amid deepening crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the faction loyal to Taminu Turaki on Tuesday held an emergency meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).

The session, chaired by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, comes in the wake of a recent Appellate Court ruling that nullified the PDP’s November convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Turaki and members of the current National Working Committee (NWC) were elected during that now-invalidated gathering.

The meeting is part of efforts to chart a path forward for the faction following the judicial setback, which has intensified internal divisions within Nigeria’s main opposition party.

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, the only PDP governor in the North, was among those in attendance, underscoring the high-level participation despite the party’s shrinking gubernatorial footprint.

Related developments indicate broader discussions on the party’s future. In remarks tied to the ongoing BoT engagements, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde described the period as challenging, stating, “What is happening in the party is a challenging period for PDP leaders and members and also a challenging period for democracy in Nigeria.”

Chairman Wabara emphasized the need for resolution, noting, “There was need to find solution to what is happening,” and added that the BoT views the Appeal Court judgment as “an order for the party to begin again.”

He stressed the seriousness of the deliberations, saying the meeting was “not for speech making, but a day that we have to be very serious with the decisions we are going to arrive at.”

He urged brevity, stating, “We should be very brief with our thoughts. Once we get the briefing of this expanded process meeting, the Board will meet to take its decision.”

The gathering highlights the Turaki faction’s push to maintain legitimacy and regroup following the court decision that favored rival claims, including those associated with the Wike-led group which had successfully challenged the Ibadan convention.

The PDP’s internal rift continues to raise concerns about the opposition’s cohesion ahead of future elections, with this BoT meeting signaling attempts to stabilize the Turaki-led structure amid the fallout.
