Your Votes Will Count, INEC Chairman Assures Ekiti Voters

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, has reassured residents of Ekiti State that their votes will be counted in the upcoming June 20 governorship election.

Speaking in Ado Ekiti during a stakeholders’ meeting focused on election readiness and the presentation of the voters’ register, Amupitan emphasized that credible elections remain a priority. The event included representatives from political parties, civil society groups, the media, and electoral officials.

He disclosed that the updated register contains over one million eligible voters, compiled through a recent voter registration exercise, and encouraged citizens to participate actively in the election.

Drawing from the recent governorship poll in Anambra State, the INEC chairman noted improvements in voter turnout and transparency, stating that similar standards would be upheld in Ekiti.

On the issue of vote-buying, Amupitan took a firm stance, describing it as a punishable offence under the law. He warned that anyone involved in such practices would face arrest and prosecution, with agencies like the police and anti-corruption bodies expected to enforce compliance.

He further stressed that successful elections depend on collaboration, urging political parties to mobilise voters responsibly while maintaining fairness and adherence to democratic principles.

Also speaking at the event, Sam Olumekun highlighted the importance of the voters’ register, noting that it had undergone thorough verification to ensure accuracy and inclusiveness. He assured stakeholders that no eligible voter had been excluded.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti, Bunmi Omoseyindemi, called on political actors and their supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding as the election approaches.

With preparations underway, the Ekiti governorship poll is expected to be a closely watched contest in the region.
