RUWATSSA, Water Ministry Lead WASH-for-Health Initiative In Obubra

NIGERIA, CALABAR – The Cross River State Government, through the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSSA) and the Ministry of Water Resources, in collaboration with Self Help Africa (SHA), is set to host a WASH System for Health (WS4H) stakeholders’ meeting in Obubra on Monday, October 27, 2025.

According to The Investigator, the meeting, scheduled to hold at the Obubra Local Government Council Hall by 9:00 a.m., will focus on improving collaboration, sustainability, and impact in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programmes across local communities.

The Chairman of Obubra Local Government Area, Hon. Kingsley Arikpo, in a statement cited by The Investigator, praised the partnership between the state government and Self Help Africa, describing the initiative as timely and essential.

He pledged the council’s full support for the success of the meeting, stressing that access to clean water and improved hygiene remains a top development need in rural Cross River. “You are welcome, and thank you for choosing Obubra,” Arikpo said, assuring organisers of a hitch-free event.

Leading the advance team to finalise logistics and meet local authorities, Mr. Felix Irek explained that Obubra was chosen as the host venue due to the high incidence of cholera in the area. He urged the council to sustain its cooperation with the WS4H team.

“This programme will expand access to WASH services and improve the overall health of our people,” Irek told The Investigator, while outlining the project’s goals, scope, and expected impact.

During a courtesy visit, the Acting Paramount Ruler of Obubra, His Royal Majesty Ovarr Sylvanus Uduma Ovat, commended the initiative and assured the team of the traditional council’s support.

Similarly, the Member representing Obubra Constituency II in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Egbe Abeng, described the WS4H initiative as a “vital step” toward improving health and hygiene in local communities.

Stakeholders from government ministries, civil society groups, traditional institutions, and community-based organisations are expected to participate. Discussions will centre on strengthening WASH systems for sustainable and accountable service delivery across the state.
