Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has urged the Federal Government to overhaul its security strategy by prioritising the recruitment and deployment of military and police personnel to their states of origin.
In a post on his verified X handle on Wednesday, the ex-lawmaker insisted that local knowledge of terrain is a decisive advantage in the fight against terrorism and banditry ravaging several parts of the country.
“In combatting bandits and terrorists, the recruitment of military and police personnel should place emphasis on regions with the highest levels of insecurity,” Sani wrote.
“They should be recruited, trained, equipped and sent to their states and regions to fight the criminals. They know their terrain better than anyone,” he said.
Sani also demanded comprehensive training and the provision of sophisticated equipment to boost the effectiveness of such locally deployed forces.
His call comes amid a surge in abductions, including repeated attacks on schoolchildren across northern and north-central Nigeria.
