Shehu Slams UK Minister Kemi Badenoch Over Alleged Nigerian Identity Statement

Former Nigerian senator and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has criticized British politician Kemi Badenoch over what he described as her refusal to identify as Nigerian.

In his post on X formerly known as Twitter, Shehu Sani wrote:
“Your name is still ‘Kemi’ and you don’t want to identify as Nigerian, that’s ok. Just bring back our name. You can change to ‘Kimberly’ or Kim Kardashian.”

The tweet is a rebuke to recent statements by Badenoch which appears to many as a way of distancing herself from her Nigerian heritage. Kemi Badenoch currently serves as the UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade. She was born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents and has often spoken of her multicultural upbringing. However, her perceived reluctance to openly embrace her Nigerian roots has sparked criticism, particularly from those who view her success as a point of pride for the diaspora.

Shehu’s post on X is a call for Kemi to perhaps “return her name” if she chooses not to identify with her Nigerian heritage because bearing a name from the Yoruba ancestry but distancing herself from Nigeria is unrealistic.

Truth Live News recalls that this is not the first time Shehu is openly criticizing Kemi. Some weeks ago, in reaction to Kemi’s statement about her inability to give her children Nigerian citizenship because she is a woman, Shehu responded in a tweet saying;

“Why should Kemi Badenoch be bothered about getting Nigerian citizenship for her offspring from a country she rebuked and rejected?

”She should just enjoy her adopted home and leave us alone in our father’s house.”

Many Nigerians on social media perceive Kemi’s statements about the nation as an attempt to undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty to score political points in the UK.
