President Bola Tinubu has taken a decisive step by requesting the Supreme Court to dismiss the appeal lodged by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding the 2023 presidential election results. Tinubu contended that the appeal is abusive in nature and failed to substantiate the allegations made by Atiku and the PDP at the Tribunal. He maintained that the Tribunal’s initial ruling was accurate and rightly validated his election victory.

The appeal, filed by Atiku and the PDP, contested the presidential election results, cited irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. They also claimed that Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima, were ineligible to run and did not secure the election with the majority of lawful votes. However, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, on September 6, ruled against Atiku, stating that he failed to provide sufficient evidence for his claims.

In response, Atiku and the PDP appealed to the Supreme Court, arguing that the Tribunal’s findings were tainted by “serious errors and substantial misrepresentation,” leading to a miscarriage of justice. This legal battle will be closely watched as it unfolds in the highest court in the land, shaping the future of Nigeria’s political landscape.
