King Charles III delivered one of the most memorable lines of his state visit to Washington on Tuesday,28th of April, 2026 playfully taunting President Donald Trump during dinner toasts at the White House.
Referencing Trump’s earlier comments that European nations would be speaking German if not for American intervention in World War II, the King fired back with an immediate rejoinder: “Dare I say that, if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French.”
The remark drew loud laughter from the room and quickly became the most talked-about moment on a memorable night that marked the second day of the Britain’s Monarch state visit to the United States.
The King’s quip was a nod to the colonial-era rivalry between Britain and France, when the two powers battled for control of North America before American independence 250 years ago.
Charles did not stop there. He also joked about the extensive renovations Trump has made to the White House East Wing, cheekily noting that British soldiers had made their own attempt at “real estate redevelopment” of the building back in 1814, when they set it ablaze during the War of 1812.
He rounded out his remarks by describing the evening as “a very considerable improvement on the Boston Tea Party.”
Trump, an avid admirer of the British royal family whose mother hailed from Scotland, kept his humor aimed at domestic targets, praising Charles for his earlier address to Congress and joking that the King had managed to get Democrats to stand and applaud something Trump said he had never been able to do himself.
