Nigeria’s army says its troops have killed two suspected terrorists during a security operation in Ondo state.
They said the operation was carried out on 14 February along the Akunu–Auga road in Akoko North-East Local Government Area.
According to a statement by Major Irabor Njoka, spokesperson for the 32 Artillery Brigade, the troops were acting on intelligence reports about the movement of armed criminals in the area. Soldiers deployed from a forward operating base in Auga reportedly intercepted the suspects, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire.
Two of the suspects were killed during the confrontation, while others escaped with gunshot wounds, the army said.
The operation was conducted jointly with officers of the Ondo State Security Network Agency and local vigilante groups.
Weapons and other items recovered at the scene included an AK-47 rifle, two magazines loaded with 61 rounds of ammunition, three mobile phones, a knife, a torchlight, suspected illegal drugs, charms and about 39,000 naira in cash.
The army said the operation demonstrated its determination to restrict the movement of criminal groups and protect residents of the state.
Major Njoka added that troops would continue patrols along identified criminal routes and strengthen cooperation with other security agencies and local communities.
He also urged members of the public to share credible information with security forces, saying public cooperation remained essential to efforts to improve safety across Ondo State.
