Nigerian-born British singer Helen Folasade Adu CBE, popularly known as Sade Adu has been nominated for the 2026 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, marking the second time she has been shortlisted for the prestigious honour.
The 67-year-old Grammy Award winner is among 17 artists nominated for induction this year. Known for her distinctive contralto voice and timeless hits such as Smooth Operator and The Sweetest Taboo, Sade remains one of the most influential and respected figures in global music.
The list of nominees, announced on Wednesday, reflects a wide range of musical genres and generations. Ten of the 17 nominees are appearing on the ballot for the first time, highlighting both emerging recognition and long-standing influence within the music industry.
The first-time nominees include Jeff Buckley, Phil Collins, Melissa Etheridge, Lauryn Hill, INXS, New Edition, Pink, Shakira, Luther Vandross, Wu-Tang Clan.
Other returning nominees, alongside Sade, include The Black Crowes, Mariah Carey, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis.
These artists have previously been nominated but are yet to secure induction into the Hall of Fame.
To be eligible for nomination, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years ago. The final inductees will be selected through a voting process involving more than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals. The successful candidates are expected to be announced in April, with the official induction ceremony scheduled to take place later in the year.
Sade was previously nominated in 2024, further highlighting her enduring impact on the music industry. In 1986, she made history by becoming the first Nigerian-born artist to win a Grammy Award, a milestone that cemented her global legacy.
Widely regarded as one of the most successful British female artists of all time, Sade has built a career defined by critical acclaim, commercial success, and lasting influence. Her nomination once again reflects her continued relevance and contribution to international music.
