A coalition of prominent opposition leaders on Thursday gathered at the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Abuja for a high-stakes press conference aimed at addressing mounting concerns over the recently amended Electoral Act signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Leading the charge were political heavyweights including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola. Their presence underscored the gravity of the issues at stake and signaled a rare moment of unity among opposition figures.

Also in attendance was the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, who joined forces with outspoken senator Dino Melaye and other key figures from major opposition parties.
The gathering, described by insiders as a “strategic convergence,” is expected to produce a unified position on what many of the leaders have termed “contentious and potentially regressive” provisions in the amended Electoral Act. While full details of their objections are yet to be officially disclosed, sources indicate that concerns range from electoral transparency to the independence of key institutions overseeing Nigeria’s democratic process.

Speaking briefly before the commencement of the closed-door session, Amaechi emphasized the importance of collective action. “This is beyond party lines; it is about safeguarding democracy and ensuring that the will of the Nigerian people is neither compromised nor diluted,” he stated.
