Zamfara Villagers Repel 50-Bike Bandit Assault in Fierce Gun Battle

Local vigilantes and residents of Yar Tasha Sahabi community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State successfully repelled a large-scale bandit attack, holding their ground against heavily armed assailants in a prolonged and intense firefight.

The attack, which occurred on Thursday evening, saw an estimated 50 motorcycles conveying scores of armed bandits descend on the rural community in what appeared to be a coordinated raid. Eyewitness accounts revealed that the attackers, believed to be part of a notorious bandit network operating within the region, opened fire sporadically in an attempt to overrun the settlement.

However, in a swift and united response, local vigilantes—supported by determined community members—mobilized to confront the invaders. Armed with locally fabricated firearms and lacking basic protective gear such as body armour, the defenders engaged the attackers in a fierce gun duel that reportedly lasted several hours.

Residents described the encounter as “terrifying but heroic,” noting that the defenders displayed exceptional bravery despite being significantly outgunned and outnumbered. “They came in large numbers, shooting and trying to create panic, but our vigilantes stood firm. They didn’t retreat,” a local source recounted.

Sources within the community confirmed that the bandits eventually retreated after facing stiff resistance, abandoning their mission to sack the village. While the exact number of casualties on either side remains unclear, residents said the successful defense prevented what could have been a devastating attack involving loss of lives and property.
