Ahead of the Edo State Governorship Election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State is facing significant challenges. The party appears to be in disarray as hundreds of thousands of Edo residents participated in a massive march supporting the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidates Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie on Tuesday.
The march, organized in less than 24 hours and held across three local government areas within Benin City—Egor, Ikpoba-Okha, and Oredo—drew participants from other LGAs as well, demonstrating strong support for the PDP. The event emphasized the widespread popularity and support for Ighodalo and Ogie among Edo residents.
Starting at 9:00 AM from the Museum Ground in the city center, the march featured lively music and spontaneous participation from women at the Oba market, Akpakpava, and Airport road areas. Over 1,000 support groups showcased banners, posters, and placards, while branded vehicles displayed messages of support for the PDP candidates.
The procession moved through key areas including Ring Road, Akpakpava, and Oba market, before concluding at the PDP State Secretariat on Airport Road. Participants, including a large number of PVC holders, were in high spirits, chanting slogans in support of Ighodalo and Ogie.
Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, the Director General of the PDP/Asue-Ogie Campaign Council, led the rally, joined by other campaign council members and Edo patriots. The arrival of Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie at the rally further energized the crowd, igniting excitement and enthusiasm.
This event is seen as a prelude to more intra-state movements, rallies, and marches for the PDP candidates as the September gubernatorial election approaches. The APC, meanwhile, has been struggling to maintain its footing, with many residents expressing their intent to vote for Ighodalo and Ogie, who are viewed as capable and experienced leaders poised to continue the progress made by Governor Godwin Obaseki.
In contrast, the Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, has faced criticism for his perceived arrogance and disregard for the rule of law. This has led some supporters, particularly those from the Obidient movement, to shift their allegiance to Ighodalo and Ogie.
As the campaign momentum builds, the PDP appears to have a strong and united base of support, with many residents and diaspora members eagerly anticipating the September 21 election to cast their votes for the candidates they believe will best serve Edo State.
