FG Increases Allowances For Civil Servants, Vows Improve Welfare of Public Sector Workers

The Federal Government of Nigeria on Friday, 24th of April, 2026 has announced a significant upward review of allowances for civil servants across the country, in a move aimed at cushioning the effects of rising inflation and improving the welfare of public sector workers.

The announcement was made by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, who described the decision as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to the well-being of its workforce and the sustainability of an efficient public service.

The reviewed allowances are said to cover a range of benefits, including transport, housing, and meal allowances, with adjustments varying across grade levels.

Senior government officials indicated that the review was the outcome of extensive consultations between relevant ministries, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, and organized labour unions, who had long advocated for improved conditions of service. The new rates are expected to take effect from the beginning of the next payment cycle.

Labour leaders have largely welcomed the development, with the Nigeria Civil Service Union describing it as a step in the right direction, while calling on the government to ensure prompt and consistent implementation.

However, some economic analysts have urged caution, warning that the increased fiscal burden on the government wage bill must be matched with corresponding improvements in revenue generation to avoid widening the national deficit.

Civil servants across federal ministries expressed cautious optimism, with many hoping the announcement would translate into tangible relief amid the country’s challenging economic climate.
