2023 SDP Guber Candidate, Ajaka Joins APC, Apologises to Yahaya Bello, Calls for Peace, Unity in Kogi State

Yakubu Murtala Ajaka, the 2023 Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Kogi State, has publicly apologised to former Governor Yahaya Bello, months after he dumped the SDP to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he is now an aspirant for the 2027 Kogi East Senatorial District election.

In a statement titled “A Call for Peace, Unity and Progress of Our Dear State” released on Monday, May 4, 2026, Ajaka extended an olive branch to his former political foe, stressing the need for reconciliation.

“I wish to state, clearly and sincerely, that those differences were never personal, but driven by the circumstances of the time and the passion for the causes we each represented,” Ajaka said.

He added, “In the overriding interest of peace, unity, and the progress of our dear state, I believe it is both necessary and honourable to rise above the past. I extend a hand of understanding and goodwill, and where my actions or words may have caused offence, I PROFOUNDLY APOLOGIZE in the spirit of reconciliation.”

Ajaka recalled the heated 2023 electioneering period, during which he had described Bello as a “common enemy” that needed to be removed from power. He acknowledged the deep divisions the contest created and paid tribute to his supporters.

“I remain profoundly grateful to every individual, every group, and every community that stood with us… I must also pause in solemn remembrance of our gallant supporters who lost their lives in the course of that struggle. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” he stated.

The former SDP candidate emphasised that no personal or political ambition should supersede the interest of the state.

“At this critical point in our state’s journey, we must remind ourselves that no ambition, no contest, and no individual interest is greater than the peace, stability, and collective advancement of Kogi State.

Our focus must now shift from division to unity, collaboration, and from the past to the future; we must build together,” Ajaka declared.

He reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Kogi State, saying he remains dedicated to the ideals of peace, inclusion, and building a stronger, more prosperous state.

The reconciliation move comes as Ajaka positions himself within the ruling APC structure for a senatorial bid in Kogi East in 2027, marking a major shift in his political alignment nearly three years after the contentious governorship election.
