CALABAR, NIGERIA – The South-South Zonal Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has congratulated the Chairman of the Edo State Council of the union, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, on his appointment as the Managing Director of the Edo Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).
The commendation was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the NUJ South-South Zonal Executive Council meeting held in Calabar, Cross River State, on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
The meeting, which was presided over by the South-South Zonal Vice President, Comrade Opaka Dokubo, described Alenkhe’s appointment as a recognition of his competence and contribution to the journalism profession.
The Zone also commended the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for finding the NUJ Chairman worthy of the responsibility.
The communiqué stated that the appointment reflected confidence in the capacity of media professionals to contribute meaningfully to public administration and broadcasting development.
The South-South NUJ leadership also appreciated the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union for lifting the sanction earlier placed on the Secretary of the Delta State Council, Comrade Victor Sorokwu.
The Zonal Council described the decision as a positive step towards strengthening unity and cohesion within the union.
The meeting further called for improved support systems among NUJ State Councils, urging them to establish dedicated funding mechanisms to assist zonal executives in attending national assignments and engagements on behalf of the region.
The communiqué also expressed appreciation to the Cross River State Council of the NUJ for hosting the zonal meeting and reviving zonal activities after a prolonged period without such engagements.
The Zone resolved that the proposed Patron of the South-South NUJ, Elder Bolaji Anani, should formally communicate his acceptance of the nomination, while also calling for a review of the status of Grand Patrons and Patrons to determine those who have not met the expectations attached to their positions.
The meeting also congratulated members and stakeholders who have continued to contribute to the growth of the union and urged State Councils across the region to use zonal meetings as platforms for resolving challenges affecting journalists.
The NUJ South-South Zone reaffirmed its commitment to the unity, growth and progress of the union, while pledging continued advocacy for good governance, professional ethics and the welfare of journalists across the region.
