In a revealing post-match discussion, Super Eagles midfielder, Frank Onyeka, has disclosed the strategic advantage gained from Victor Osimhen’s insights, which played a big role in Nigeria’s impressive 2-0 victory over Cameroon in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16.
Known for his outstanding performance against André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Onyeka shares that Osimhen’s pre-game advice proved instrumental in neutralizing the Napoli teammate’s playing style, preventing him from executing crucial passes.
Speaking on The Hindsight Podcast, Onyeka highlighted Osimhen’s guidance: “Osimhen told me that he likes to play short, short passes and tries to connect. He doesn’t play long, so when he gets the ball, I try to close him as much as possible, even Alex, because we know that he doesn’t turn, doesn’t play long passes. He only tries to connect with the strikers with short passes.”
This tactical approach showcased in the match, with Onyeka effectively limiting Anguissa’s playmaking capabilities. The midfielder expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, “It has been good; I try to do my job as much as I can, so I guess it’s working well so far. I’m really, really glad.”
