A wave of concern has followed the abduction of students and staff from several schools in Oyo State, after distress videos from the victims surfaced online.
The incident occurred on May 15, when armed attackers on motorcycles invaded schools in Oriire Local Government Area, including primary and secondary institutions. During the attack, multiple pupils, teachers, and school officials were taken, while at least one staff member and a civilian lost their lives.
In videos circulating on social media, some of the abducted individuals pleaded for help, urging authorities and the public to intervene quickly to secure their freedom. The emotional appeals highlighted the fear and uncertainty faced by the victims, especially the children.
Security agencies have acknowledged the videos and stated that investigations are ongoing. Authorities say efforts are underway to verify the footage, track down those responsible, and rescue the captives safely.
Reacting to the situation, Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele condemned the attacks, describing them as a serious threat to the country’s future. He emphasized the need for stronger security measures, including the establishment of state police, and urged swift legislative action to address insecurity nationwide.
The pan-Yoruba group Afenifere also expressed alarm, warning that the region is increasingly vulnerable to violent attacks. The group called on state governments to take more decisive steps in protecting communities and preventing further incidents.
Oyo State officials have assured the public that security forces are actively pursuing the attackers. According to the Deputy Governor, operations involving the police, military, and local security groups are ongoing, with some suspects reportedly neutralized.
Meanwhile, Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has pledged to strengthen security, particularly around schools and rural areas. Neighboring states have also begun tightening their own security measures to prevent similar attacks.
Traditional leaders, including the Alaafin of Oyo, have urged the government to improve intelligence gathering and adopt more proactive strategies rather than reacting after attacks occur.
