Edo Rescues Trafficked Trio from Burkina Faso; One Victim Loses Sight

Lucky Obukohwo, Reporting

The Edo State Government, through its Migration Agency, has rescued three trafficked Nigerians from Burkina Faso, reaffirming its commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens and addressing human trafficking.

The victims, two women and a man, were received at the Benin Airport by the Director General of the agency, Lucky Agazuma, who said the successful rescue underscores the proactive leadership and humanitarian focus of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

One of the female victims, identified as Precious, reportedly became visually impaired during her ordeal in Burkina Faso, while another, Peace, suffered physical assault. The male victim, Evans Enwata, was also rescued after enduring difficult conditions.

Speaking journalists, Agazuma disclosed that the Okpebholo-led administration has put in place strong mechanisms not only to rescue victims but also to ensure their full rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

He emphasized that Governor Okpebholo has consistently demonstrated compassion and commitment to human development, noting that the rehabilitation and empowerment of returnees has become a standard practice under his administration.

“This rescue is a clear demonstration of the commitment of Governor Monday Okpebholo to the welfare and dignity of Edo people, no matter where they find themselves.”

“Since this administration came on board, the governor has made it a priority to rehabilitate and empower returnees, and these victims will not be left out.”

According to him, the state government is also intensifying efforts to clamp down on human trafficking networks, with several arrests already made. He warned traffickers to desist from the illegal trade, stressing that the government will continue to track and prosecute offenders.

Agazuma expressed appreciation to the governor for his strong support for humanitarian initiatives, as well as to the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Edesili Anani Okpebholo, for her dedication and backing of the agency’s activities.

“We have also stepped up actions against traffickers. Arrests have been made, and we will not relent. Anyone involved in human trafficking should desist or be ready to face the full weight of the law.”

Speaking on behalf of the victims, Evans Enwata thanked the Edo State Government for securing their freedom and giving them a second chance at life. He cautioned young people against embarking on irregular migration journeys to countries like Burkina Faso, describing the experience as dangerous and traumatic.

“I thank the Edo State Government and the governor for rescuing me. What we went through over there is not something anyone should experience.”

“I want to advise young people to stay away from going to Burkina Faso. It is not worth it. There is nothing there but suffering.”

The latest rescue highlights the sustained efforts of the Edo State Government under Governor Okpebholo to combat human trafficking, safeguard its citizens, and provide meaningful support for victims of exploitation.
