FG Begins Payment of Doctors’ Salary Arrears

The Federal Government has commenced payment of long-awaited salary arrears owed to members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) following the review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

The development was announced on Monday, April 13, 2026, by NARD’s Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr Abdulmajid Ibrahim, in a statement to members. He noted that the arrears—covering between one and six months for some doctors—are already being disbursed.

“The leadership of NARD is pleased to inform all members that payment of the outstanding 25/35 CONMESS review arrears has commenced,” the statement read.

Several doctors have reportedly confirmed receiving their payments, while others are expected to be credited in the coming days.

Ibrahim assured members yet to receive their arrears that the process is ongoing and urged patience, adding that minor administrative issues are affecting part of the disbursement.

He explained that the August component of the arrears is facing slight delays, which could extend payments by up to two weeks.

“Payments for August are currently facing a few challenges that are being addressed. The August arrears may be delayed by about a week or two,” he said.

The CONMESS review, which governs salary adjustments for medical and dental officers in Nigeria’s public sector, has long been a source of friction between doctors and the government. Delays in implementation and arrears settlement have previously triggered strikes by resident doctors, disrupting services in public hospitals.

Resident doctors, who play a critical role in Nigeria’s tertiary healthcare system, have consistently raised concerns over welfare issues, including unpaid salaries, poor working conditions, and the increasing migration of medical professionals abroad.

The ongoing payment of arrears is seen as a positive step toward addressing these concerns and preventing potential industrial action within the sector.

Ibrahim advised members with unresolved payment issues after the disbursement period to report through their respective centre leadership for prompt resolution.

“We sincerely appreciate your patience, resilience, and continued trust. Be assured that we remain committed to the welfare and well-being of all NARD members,” he added.
