Nollywood actress Dayo Amusa has responded to criticism directed at entertainers who are often accused of not speaking frequently enough about Nigeria’s security challenges.
In a recent post on social media platform X, the actress expressed frustration over what she described as constant attacks on members of the creative industry whenever they share content related to their work instead of commenting on national issues.
Amusa argued that actors and filmmakers invest significant resources into their projects, including obtaining loans with high interest rates, and should not be expected to abandon their professional responsibilities to focus exclusively on discussing insecurity or criticizing government officials online.
According to her, many entertainers face intense scrutiny regardless of what they post, with some being labeled insensitive simply for promoting their films or expressing personal views.
The actress also stated that she would not allow online pressure to dictate how she uses her platform, adding that she intends to remain focused on her career and other business ventures rather than responding to every demand from social media users.
While defending her position, Amusa expressed sympathy for victims of the recent school abduction incident in Oyo State. She offered prayers for the safe return of the kidnapped pupils and teachers and comfort for their families.
Her remarks come amid ongoing public discussions about insecurity in Nigeria and the role celebrities should play in speaking out on national concerns. Several public figures have recently voiced differing opinions on whether entertainers have a responsibility to use their influence to advocate on such issues.
The debate has gained further attention following comments from British-Nigerian rapper Skepta and singer Davido, both of whom recently addressed concerns about insecurity and governance in the country.
