The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, has launched a sweeping campaign to tackle corruption and misconduct at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

Speaking at a crucial meeting with heads of security agencies, she warned officials against soliciting bribes and tips from passengers, stressing that those caught would face severe penalties.

Mrs. Kuku highlighted persistent complaints from the Presidency, the Minister of Aviation, and passengers about harassment and extortion at screening points. She emphasized that such behavior undermines Nigeria’s reputation and deters foreign investors, who often experience MMIA as their first impression of the country.

During the meeting, she unveiled “Operation AirClean,” a campaign backed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, to restore order and professionalism at the airport. Mrs. Kuku called for immediate action to end unethical practices, including the dismantling of search tables and the deployment of technology to improve screening processes.

She condemned reports of some officials justifying their actions by citing poor pensions or pressure to deliver illicit returns to their superiors. According to Mrs. Kuku, such excuses will no longer be tolerated, as the airport must no longer serve as a means for personal enrichment.

She also announced plans to use mystery shoppers equipped with body cameras to monitor staff interactions with passengers. Measures to ensure accountability and swift justice include mobile courts to prosecute offenders and designated areas to reduce congestion and improve orderliness.

Heads of security agencies, including the Police, Customs, Immigration, and Aviation Security, pledged to uphold higher standards and enhance oversight of their officers. Mrs. Kuku stressed that collaboration among agencies would be key to creating a welcoming and efficient airport environment.

The campaign reflects a firm commitment to transforming MMIA into a world-class facility free from corruption, enhancing the experience for both Nigerians and international visitors.
