BREAKING: Backlash as FIFA Delays Verdict on Nigeria, DR Congo World Cup Dispute

Fresh tension has gripped Nigeria’s football space as FIFA continues to delay its ruling on the eligibility controversy involving Nigeria and DR Congo following last November’s Africa 2026 World Cup play-off, Truth live news reports.

The dispute, officially filed by the Nigeria Football Federation in December, questions the eligibility of DR Congo players including Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, among others. Nigeria’s contention is based on Congolese nationality law, which reportedly does not recognise dual citizenship.

According to NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, the issue centers on nationality status.
“The Congolese law says you cannot have dual nationality, but some of their players have European passports. Our contention is that FIFA was deceived into clearing them,” he stated.

What Happened

DR Congo defeated the Super Eagles on penalties to advance to the intercontinental play-off stage, where they could face Jamaica or New Caledonia. However, Nigeria insists the result should be reviewed if ineligible players were fielded.

The Congolese Football Federation has dismissed the protest, describing it as “an attempt to win via the back door.”

Meanwhile, NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire clarified that no verdict has been communicated.

“Any claims that a ruling has been made are false. FIFA has not communicated any verdict to us or to the Congolese federation,” he said.

Growing Reactions

The delay has sparked intense reactions across social media, with fans divided over whether Nigeria should hold onto hope or shift focus to future competitions.

Football analyst Mamadou Gaye, speaking on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa programme, urged calm.

“We should wait for FIFA to make the decision. Remember that Bafana Bafana had points taken away right at the last minute. Nigeria should remain calm and prepared,” he said.

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi also admitted the uncertainty is affecting the team.

“We are still waiting; hopefully, we can go to the World Cup,” Iwobi said.

What’s at Stake

Nigeria risks missing a second consecutive World Cup if the ruling does not go in its favour , a major blow for a team featuring stars like Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.

On the other hand, DR Congo is aiming to return to the global stage for the first time since 1974, when it competed as Zaire.

As the countdown to the intercontinental play-off draws closer, FIFA’s silence continues to fuel speculation, anxiety, and debate.

For now, Nigeria waits.
