The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has strongly denied viral social media reports alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has divorced his wife, Awele, describing the claims as false, defamatory, and malicious.
In a formal statement issued by the bank’s Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, Alero Ladipo, UBA said the claims are “entirely fabricated, reckless, and without basis,” warning individuals and platforms circulating the content to immediately cease dissemination or face legal consequences.
The bank added that the false publication had been deliberately designed to mislead the public and cause reputational damage to both Elumelu and the UBA brand.
UBA disclosed that the matter has been referred to relevant law enforcement authorities, who have already commenced action, and confirmed that three individuals directly connected to the creation and dissemination of the false posts have been arrested: Kingsley Akunemeihe (@Directorkem), Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue (@problemchimky).
Investigations are described as ongoing and are expected to lead to further arrests and prosecutions of all persons involved in originating, amplifying, or sustaining the defamatory campaign.
UBA further directed all involved parties to immediately remove the false publications, halt further reposts, and preserve all digital records, metadata, communications, and related materials for legal scrutiny.
The bank reiterated its commitment to pursuing all available legal avenues both civil and criminal to hold those responsible accountable.
The development comes as Nigerian corporations increasingly turn to law enforcement to counter the growing threat of reputational attacks and misinformation on social media platforms.
