Eight Kidnapped Scripture Union Delegates Freed After 22 Days

Eight members of the Scripture Union (SU) who were abducted on June 14 along the Imo-Anambra interstate boundary while returning from a national conference have been released after spending 22 days in captivity.

Among those freed are the organisation’s Director-General, Uwem Cosmas, and Abolarin Tomisin, a 300-level Law student at the University of Ibadan.

The victims were part of the Scripture Union’s Osogbo Regional Conference delegation.

Confirming the development, the President of the Scripture Union, University of Ibadan Branch, Temidayo Adeboye, said the release was officially communicated to the Students’ Union in the early hours of Monday after confirmation from the relevant authorities and representatives of the organisation.

Mr Adeboye stated: “The released individuals are currently undergoing the necessary post-release procedures and will return to their respective destinations as arrangements are concluded.

“We have been assured that our student will safely return to the university community soon.”

The development was further confirmed in a video, yesterday, showing the victims and several congregants praying and singing praises.

The spokesperson for the police command in Imo, Henry Okoye, was yet to react to the development as of the time of this report yesterday.
