Accord Party Bows Out of Abia 2027 Governorship Race, Throws Weight Behind Governor Otti

The Accord Party has formally withdrawn from the Abia State governorship race and endorsed the re-election bid of Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party.

The National Office of the Accord Party made the announcement on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to Governor Otti at his country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area. The decision underscores the party’s recognition of the governor’s performance in office.

National Chairman of the Accord Party, Professor Christopher Imumolen, led the delegation alongside National Secretary, Malam Mukhtar Abdullah Djungo. Professor Imumolen explained that Governor Otti’s impressive record earned him the party’s support.

“The performance of the Abia State Governor earned him the support of the AC national office,” Imumolen said. He added that opposition parties “should not only exist in Nigeria as instruments of criticism but should also acknowledge the areas they did well.”

Malam Mukhtar Abdullah Djungo reinforced the party’s position with a firm directive to its state structures.

“On behalf of our party, I want to assure your Excellency that no candidate from our party will be contesting for the Governorship position in Abia State. The National Working Committee has directed the State Executive of the party to join hands with the Labour Party and work for the good of the people of Abia State. Let the good work continue,” the National Secretary stated.

Governor Alex Otti expressed gratitude for the endorsement and pledged continued collaboration.

“The whole essence of politics is about the welfare of our people and security of our people,” Governor Otti said.

The move by the Accord Party is seen as a major boost for Governor Otti’s second-term ambition, potentially consolidating opposition support and reducing fragmentation in the 2027 contest. Political observers note it as a rare display of cross-party pragmatism focused on governance outcomes rather than rivalry.
