Jigawa Raises Ward Heads’ Allowance

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has approved an increase in the monthly allowance of ward heads, also known as Maiunguwa.

The decision was announced on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, following the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Dutse.

The allowance was raised from N3,000 to N10,000, according to the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Nura Kazaure, who briefed journalists on the outcome of the meeting.

Kazaure said the adjustment reflected what he described as the humane disposition of the governor’s administration.

“The increase in the monthly allowance of ward heads highlights the humane gesture that characterises the empathy and sympathy of His Excellency Mallam Umar A. Namadi, FCA-led administration,” he said.

He described ward heads as “traditional institution foot soldiers” who provide grassroots leadership and assist in implementing government directives within their communities.

According to him, the council recognised the role played by the traditional leaders in community administration, noting that the review of their allowance was aimed at acknowledging their contributions.

“The all-inclusive approach ensures that no one is left behind on the journey towards greater Jigawa,” he said while quoting the council’s resolution.

The commissioner added that the increase became necessary due to current economic realities and the responsibilities carried by the ward heads.

At the same meeting, the council approved the transmission of a bill to the Jigawa State House of Assembly for the establishment of the Jigawa State University of Medical and Allied Health Sciences.

“The council has approved the transmission of a bill for a law to establish Jigawa State University of Medical and Allied Health Sciences to the Jigawa State House of Assembly,” Kazaure said.

He also announced the appointment of the institution’s first principal officers.

According to him, Mahmud Sani was appointed Vice-Chancellor, Muhammad Jahun as Registrar, Muhammadu Yusuf as Librarian, and Sani Sulaiman as Bursar.

“This appointment is with immediate effect and is for a period of five years,” he added.

The council also approved the membership of the central planning committee for the 2026 Jigawa State Investment Summit.

Kazaure said the committee would be chaired by the Deputy Governor, Aminu Usman, with Muhammad Sagagi serving as Vice Chairman, while the Director-General of InvestJigawa would act as Secretary.

He said the committee has 31 members drawn from InvestJigawa’s governing council, key ministries, the private sector and development partners.

“The main committee will form 11 other sub-committees, including Technical, Database/Secretariat; Summit Venue/Gala Night/Prayer Rooms; Catering; Media; Branding; Accommodation/Transportation; Security and Safety; Fundraising; Deal Rooms; and ICT,” the commissioner added.
