A police officer, Inspector Ikale Muhammed, was gravely injured in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State after a mob attacked him and a colleague while they were transporting seized hard drugs to the station, authorities have confirmed.
The violent incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday at Polo Roundabout, according to sources cited by Zagazola Makama. The two officers from ‘C’ Division had acted on credible intelligence to arrest a suspect caught with hard drugs. “The suspect fled upon sighting the officers, abandoning a bag containing hard drugs and other substances suspected to be Indian hemp,” the sources revealed, noting the suspect escaped into the Jenta Adamu area.
The situation escalated when the suspect returned with a group of motorcycle riders and launched an assault on the officers, who were en route to the station with the recovered evidence. “During the assault, one of the officers, Inspector Ikale Muhammed, sustained severe injuries,” the sources added. He was promptly taken to Bingham University Teaching Hospital for treatment.
A Bajaj Boxer motorcycle was recovered at the scene, and police reinforcements have since been deployed to the area. Authorities are intensifying efforts to identify and apprehend the attackers, signaling a firm response to the brazen assault on law enforcement.
The incident underscores the mounting risks faced by officers in their efforts to curb drug-related crimes in the region.
