Wife of Edo State governor, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, has emphasized the critical need to establish lasting peace and stability in the Niger Delta to attract and retain investments vital for the development of the oil producing region.
She made the call during the inauguration of the Niger Delta Student Union Government’s (NIDSUG) Executives, led by its President, Scott Ogunseri (DJ MOG), held at the UBTH Cooperative Hall in Benin.
Speaking at the ceremony, leaders of various youth groups representing the nine states of the Niger Delta who attended the event, Mrs. Obaseki underscored the urgency of cultivating a peaceful environment in the Niger Delta, citing its pivotal role in fostering economic growth and development.
The governor’s wife, represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Peter Okonkwo, drew attention to the pervasive crisis and conflict that have plagued the region, compelling numerous companies to relocate their headquarters from the Niger Delta to alternative areas such as Lagos.
She reaffirmed governor Godwin Obaseki’s support for the Niger Delta Student Union Government and assumed the role of patron throughout the tenure of the newly inaugurated President, in accordance with the organization’s constitution.
She encouraged the youth leaders to harness their collective strength for the betterment of students and emphasized the potential of political power to advance the interests of the Niger Delta’s youth.
She commended the cooperative spirit and collaborative effort of the various youth groups as they worked together harmoniously toward the emergence of Mr. Scott Ogunseri as President of NIDSUG, noting that it is a testament to the unity and maturity of the youth groups from the nine Niger Delta states.
In his post-inauguration speech, President Ogunseri extended his gratitude to Governor Godwin Obaseki and his wife for their unwavering support during the 2023 NIDSUG National Elective Unity Convention.
He acknowledged the importance of leadership as a responsibility, committing to steering NIDSUG towards its visionary goals.
Ogunseri stressed unity as the cornerstone of their efforts, urging his fellow NIDSUGians to work together diligently to nurture growth and development within the organization.
According to him “The inauguration marked the dawning of a new era for NIDSUG, characterized by the shared commitment of its leaders and the broader community to realize a more prosperous and harmonious Niger Delta”.
