The Nigerian singer Stanley Omah Didia, Popularly known as Omah Lay has described himself as the leading Afrobeats artist of his generation, emphasizing artistic quality over commercial success.
Speaking during a recent interview, the 28-year-old musician said his claim is based on creativity and musical depth rather than metrics such as streaming numbers or popularity.
“I am the greatest Afrobeats artist of the decade,” he said, adding that his confidence is rooted in his craft.
He noted, however, that traditional indicators like fame, personality, and chart performance might place other artists ahead in public perception.
“When it comes to numbers or stardom, you might not consider me,” he explained. “But when it comes to the art itself, I believe I stand out.”
The Port Harcourt-born artist, whose real name is Stanley Omah Didia, has previously made similar assertions about his position in Nigeria’s music industry.
He began his career as a producer in his teenage years before gaining widespread recognition in 2020 with breakout tracks such as “You” and “Bad Influence.” His style, often described as a blend of Afrobeats and introspective songwriting, has earned him a growing international audience.
At the Grammy Awards in 2026, Omah Lay received a nomination in the Best African Music Performance category for his collaboration “With You” alongside Davido. The award was ultimately won by South African artist Tyla.
The singer’s latest remarks add to ongoing conversations within the industry about how artistic excellence should be measured in Afrobeats.
