BENIN CITY, EDO – The Edo State Police Command has detained three private bouncers and a female vendor over the alleged supply and use of pepper spray during the Children’s Day celebration at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

According to the police, the pepper spray was discharged inside the stadium on May 27, causing panic among school children, parents, teachers, and guests at the event.

Those arrested are: Ifeanyi John Paul (36), Ola Ibikunle (46) and Onoha Chukwuoji (33)

Police also arrested one Rebecca Hassan, who was alleged to be linked to the sale and supply of the pepper spray.

The Command condemned the increasing misuse of pepper spray, tear-gas canisters, and other restricted security equipment by private individuals, bouncers, vigilante groups, and unauthorized security outfits.

The police warned that the unlawful possession or use of such devices could result in serious injuries, public unrest, and even fatalities.

The Command emphasized that anyone found in possession of prohibited security equipment would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The warning follows a recent tear-gas incident in Ogida, Benin City, where a police officer allegedly discharged tear gas unlawfully, resulting in the death of a resident.

The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while maintaining peace and security across Edo State.
