Benin City, Edo state
In a significant turn of events in Edo State’s political landscape, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has witnessed a collapse of support for its gubernatorial candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, in his own stronghold of Esan Central Local Government Area. The defections, largely to the rival People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Asue Ighodalo, underscore a growing discontent within the APC ranks.
Truth Live News gathered that scores of APC members, including prominent figures from Uwessan Ward II, have abandoned Okpebholo’s camp, citing dissatisfaction with his leadership and performance. They have thrown their support behind the PDP, attributing their decision to Okpebholo’s alleged failure to address critical issues in their community, notably the lack of access roads. Instead, they accuse him of prioritizing personal interests, evident in the construction of his house in Irrua, while neglecting basic infrastructure in his village.
The defectors commended Governor Obaseki for his efforts in improving the road infrastructure, particularly the Uromi to Uwessan route, which Okpebholo himself now uses. This juxtaposition highlights the disparity between rhetoric and action in Okpebholo’s representation, with constituents expressing disillusionment over unfulfilled promises and alleged misappropriation of constituency funds amounting to N650 million.
Critics argue that Okpebholo’s gubernatorial aspirations should take a back seat to his responsibilities as a Senator, urging him to refocus on delivering tangible benefits to his constituents. The defections signify a broader sentiment within the APC, painting the party as a dormant platform that caters to selfish interests rather than the welfare of the people.
