Semi Eriyo Sr, a member of the Benin Royal Family, has accused the Edo State Government of sponsoring an attack on him and his family following a petition he filed against one Pastor Kassy over alleged threats to his life and that of his family.
In a statement released on February 15, 2025, Eriyo detailed how he submitted a petition to the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Kaduna, which led to the dispatch of a team of investigators to Benin City.
In the statement, he alleged that the investigation was obstructed by individuals linked to the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, through his Chief Security Officer and a known associate, Kelly Okungbowa also known as Ebo Stone.
Eriyo described the incident as a “sponsored attack” by the Edo State Government, claiming it was an attempt to intimidate him for exercising his constitutional right to criticize public officials. He emphasized that as a Benin man, a member of the Royal Family, and a Nigerian citizen, he has the right to hold elected officials accountable without fear of retribution.
“Edo State belongs to all of us,” Eriyo stated. “No amount of intimidation or threats from the Edo State Government will stop me from speaking the truth as it relates to my beloved Edo State, the governor, or members of his administration.”
The controversy stems from a social media post by Pastor Kassy, which Eriyo claims contained direct threats to him and his family. He vowed to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion under Nigerian law, stating, “He drew first blood, but I will draw last blood.”
Eriyo also called on the public and relevant authorities to take note of the alleged obstruction of justice and the threats against his life, urging for a thorough investigation into the matter.
In a video also shared by Mr. Eriyo, Ebo Stone was seen challenging the Police officers deployed to arrest Kassy, saying, “you want to pick him up today Sunday. What nonsense?”
