CROSS RIVER, NIGERIA – Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC), Cross River State, has emerged second nationwide at the Third National Girls in ICT Competition 2026, placing the state among Nigeria’s top three performers in a contest that attracted more than 3,700 participants from across the country.
The achievement has been hailed as a significant milestone for girls’ education and digital innovation in Cross River State, with Governor Bassey Otu describing it as evidence of the state’s growing investment in technology-driven learning and human capital development.
Reacting to the feat, Governor Otu congratulated the students and their mentors, noting that their performance reflected the quality of talent and guidance available within the state’s educational system.
“To emerge among the top three winners in a highly competitive national contest involving over 3,700 participants is no ordinary accomplishment.
It reflects discipline, creativity, hard work and the quality of mentorship available to our young people,” the governor said.
He added that the students had become worthy ambassadors of Cross River State and exemplified the rewards of determination and excellence.
The competition, which brought together thousands of young girls from across Nigeria, was designed to promote digital literacy, innovation and greater participation of girls in information and communication technology.
The second-place finish by FGGC Cross River places the school among the country’s leading institutions in digital skills development and highlights the increasing role of young women in Nigeria’s technology sector.
Governor Otu said the achievement aligned with broader efforts to empower young people through education, innovation and digital inclusion.
“The future of our nation depends on how effectively we nurture the talents of our young people today. When we empower young girls with digital skills, we are investing in stronger families, stronger communities and a stronger economy,” he stated.
The governor further noted that the success recorded by the students demonstrated that young girls in the state were already making meaningful contributions to the country’s technological future.
“The achievement of FGGC Cross River demonstrates that our girls are already answering that call. They are not waiting for the future; they are actively shaping it,” he said.
Otu also welcomed plans for the nationwide deployment of Code Club kits, including Raspberry Pi computers, robotics kits and teacher-training resources, describing the initiative as a strategic investment in the next generation of innovators.
According to him, expanding access to digital learning tools will help equip students with the skills required to compete in an increasingly technology-driven global economy.
Education stakeholders have continued to emphasize the importance of increasing girls’ participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, citing digital skills as critical to future economic growth and innovation.
Truth Live News gathered that the performance of FGGC Cross River at the national competition is expected to further encourage interest in ICT education among young girls in the state and reinforce efforts to build a stronger pipeline of future technology professionals.
