
The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor and academic Patrick Okoye.
News of his passing emerged through a message shared on his official Instagram page, where a tribute post featuring his photograph described him as a legend. Details surrounding the cause of death were not immediately disclosed.
Popularly known as “Energy” among colleagues, students, and fans, Okoye was a respected professor in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka. He earned recognition in Nollywood for his strong performances in traditional and cultural roles.
Actor Ken Erics expressed deep sorrow over the loss, revealing that he had spoken with Okoye shortly before learning of his death. In a heartfelt tribute, Erics described the late actor as a mentor who played a significant role in shaping his career and encouraging his pursuit of theatre arts.
According to Erics, Okoye was passionate about developing young talent and guided many aspiring actors, performers, and creatives who later found success in the entertainment industry. He recalled the lecturer’s dedication to students, both inside and outside the classroom, as well as his enthusiasm for acting, dance, music, and stage productions.
Beyond his academic achievements, Okoye built an extensive career in film, appearing in productions such as Onye Ozil, The Duplex, Midnight Love, Old School, Finding a Wife, The Lion, The Jagaban, and Over My Dead Body.
Friends, former students, and members of the theatre community have continued to pay tribute to the actor, remembering him as a talented performer, inspiring teacher, and influential figure whose contributions left a lasting mark on both academia and Nollywood.
