Toddler Among 10 Killed in Israeli Strikes in Gaza, Civil Defence Says

At least 10 people, including a three-year-old child, were killed in separate Israeli strikes in northern Gaza, the territory’s civil defence agency said on Tuesday.

The agency’s spokesperson, Mahmoud Bassal, said four people, among them a toddler identified as Yahya al-Mallahi, died when a strike hit a police vehicle in Gaza City. Several others were reportedly injured in the incident.

Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City confirmed receiving the bodies of those killed.

Violence has persisted in the war-ravaged enclave despite a ceasefire that took effect on October 10, with both Israel and Hamas repeatedly accusing each other of violations.

When contacted, the Israeli military said it was reviewing the reports. Meanwhile, Gaza’s interior ministry stated that Israeli warplanes had targeted a police vehicle in the city centre, resulting in multiple casualties.

In a separate incident earlier on Tuesday, Bassal said another person was killed by Israeli fire in the northern town of Beit Lahia. The Israeli military said its troops had identified and killed an “armed terrorist” near the so-called Yellow Line, an area from which its forces had previously withdrawn, though it was unclear if both accounts referred to the same event.

The military also said on Wednesday that it had struck “Hamas terrorists” travelling in a truck the previous day.

Later on Tuesday evening, Gaza’s civil defence reported additional fatalities following another strike near an intersection in the Al-Shati refugee camp in Gaza City. Al-Shifa Hospital confirmed receiving five bodies from that attack, while the Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incident.

Footage from the scene showed residents gathering around a victim before carrying the body through rubble-strewn streets for burial.

The October ceasefire followed more than two years of conflict triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023 cross-border attack on Israel.

Since the truce came into effect, at least 757 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the territory’s health ministry, figures the United Nations considers credible. The Israeli military, for its part, says five of its soldiers have been killed over the same period.

Ongoing media restrictions and limited access to Gaza have made it difficult for independent organisations, including AFP, to verify casualty figures or report freely from the ground. (Source: AFP)
