Lucky Obukohwo Reporting
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed as false a media report alleging that he was offered N500 billion to contest against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, with the aim of splitting votes in the South-South region.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, described the claim as entirely false, baseless, and without any factual foundation.
Eze called on Nigerians to disregard what he described as a fabricated report published by a “little-known website” which “falsely” attributed a statement to Jonathan claiming that he was offered such an amount.
He noted that the fabrication lacked the most basic standards of journalism.
“The report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who was present or who purportedly made the alleged offer.”
Eze said the report was a deliberate fabrication designed to mislead the public and needlessly drag the former president into political controversy ahead of the 2027 elections.
He described the publication as a classic case of fake news, warning that it reflected the growing trend of misinformation and politically motivated falsehoods that often accompany the build-up to elections.
The media aide urged Nigerians to disregard the report in its entirety and exercise caution by verifying sensational claims through credible sources before sharing them, stressing that Jonathan had no involvement in the alleged plot.
