Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has revealed his final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the announcement taking place at a press conference at the Sonatel headquarters in VDN, Dakar.
The announcement marks a decisive moment in Senegal’s preparations for the tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the Lions of Teranga aiming to assemble a squad capable of competing deep into the competition.
The squad is expected to feature fresh new faces, with defender Malang Sarr and midfielder Bara Sapoko Ndiaye reportedly in line for their first senior call-ups, reflecting Thiaw’s strategy of blending proven stars with emerging talent. Pape Matar Sarr and Habib Diarra, who both missed recent action through injury, are expected to be fully fit for the summer’s tournament and feature in the squad.
The tournament in North America is likely to represent the last major stage for Senegal’s golden generation, with several high-profile stars unlikely to be at the required level by 2030.
Experienced campaigners such as goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, now 34, and captain Kalidou Koulibaly, also 34, remain central figures, with Mendy impressing during Senegal’s AFCON campaign and Koulibaly anchoring a defence that conceded just two goals on their way to the title.
Alongside them, under-25 talents Nicolas Jackson, Pape Matar Sarr, and Iliman Ndiaye provide youthful energy, while Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr and West Ham full-back El Hadji Malick Diouf are two Premier League representatives who could have a significant impact on Senegal’s chances.
Senegal have been drawn in Group I alongside France, Norway, and Iraq a formidable group that will test the Lions of Teranga to their limits.
Following the squad announcement, Senegal’s preparations will accelerate rapidly, with the national flag handed over on May 26 at the presidential palace, before the squad departs for the United States on May 27. They will then play two warm-up friendlies against the United States on May 31 and Saudi Arabia on June 9 before the World Cup kicks off.
Their recent form has been encouraging, with victories of 2-0 against Peru and 3-1 against Gambia in the March international window, giving supporters genuine hope that the Lions of Teranga can write another memorable chapter in the nation’s football history.
